Hillary Supporter Say No to Division

There comes a time when even the most die-hard fan must realize that his team is not going to win the pennant or be in the Super Bowl. It is one of life's unpleasant realities. Now let me say that I really, really like Hillary. I think she is the stronger of the two candidates and the one most likely to win in November. Unfortunately, regardless of what I think and feel, Obama will be the nominee.

It's the delegates, stupid. Winning the popular vote is simply not
sufficient to claim the prize. Perhaps Hillary wants a moral victory, but it will not give her the nomination. As much as it pains me to say it. Taking the nomination away from Obama with procedural and technical squabbling will rend the Party. It will alienate the Obama side far worse that the transient pain being felt on the the Clinton side.

So whether or not we feel Obama is the best person for the job,
that question is now mooted. He's our man. And the Republican alternative to him is so grievously flawed that our course of action seems clear.

Let's crush this Bush sycophant into dust. Let's get ready to have kids in the White House! Let's help our man grow and get stronger.
In the end it's the Party and the shared values. Let's hope this tough slog has made Barack Obama stronger. Let's hope that we remain the reality based Party.

So I ask my fellow Clintonistas. When you come, as I have, to look reality in the face, and realize that this was not the year for your gal, please don't pout or sit on your hands. The stakes are too high. First we have to get those young Americans out of harm's way. Then we can start repairing the fabric of American society. I know Barack Obama can do it with our help. So when the Mets don't go all the way, I am still a National League guy.

I Emphasize with Hillary (2.00 / 2)

supporters.  I felt the same way when Dean lost in 2004.  The difference is that Dean left early.  It's harder for Hillary supporters because Hillary came much closer and the primary went on much longer.

I think that we have to give Hillary supporters time and space.

Why can't Obama deal (none / 0)

with a competitor finishing the race until he's officially clinched? Many Hillary supporters I met have been following her for years, waiting since the 1990s for her to run.

Obama is not asking her to quit. Why are you all? When he's president is this what our country is going to be like? Don't try for universal coverage it will never pass. Windfall profits tax too hard. No, we can't. Please quit you have practically no chance.

No, we can't. No, she can't. You, you can't.

Oregon voters (none / 0)

even onces for Obama were pissed off at people asking her to quit. Asking her to quit works in her favor. You've seen all the backlashes this campaign has had. Many twists and turns.

Re: Oregon voters (none / 0)

I didn't ask her to quit.  I was hoping in 2004 that Dean would stay on.

Re: Hillary Supporter Say No to Division (2.00 / 4)

I think we will all unite come the GE, but it's always nice to see people do it sooner rather than later.

Though, I'm an Angels fan, and I will always be an American League guy if they aren't in it....with the exception of the Red Sox or Yankees. Sorry, no unity there. :P

KUDOS!

You win the Super Bowl by scoring the most points . . . be it by field goals or touchdowns.

The team with the most yards (even including Michigan) does not win the game.

But you don't call the game at third quarter (none / 0)

Obama sets a terrible example for our youth in terms of follow-through. He didn't do his job in the Senate because he was too busy running for president. Now he's doing his victory lap before he's clinched. That's fine because it's politics. But he's such a delicate flower people want Hillary to quit.

I want to play out the 4th quarter. I would bring in my GE playbook, and use it as prep for NOV.

Oh, and as a Mets fan, too, I rooted for the Cardinals in the World Series in 2006.  And that was painful to do!

Before I have to run off, let me toss out this (2.00 / 3)

example of Unity.

Charles Rangel - not a Shrinking Violet when it comes to picking on Bush - following that fop Chavez aping in New York and insulting the current United States President, was eloquent.

WASHINGTON - I want to express my extreme displeasure with statements by the President of Venezuela attacking U.S. President George Bush in such a personal and disparaging way during his remarks at the United Nations General Assembly.

It  should be clear to all heads of government that criticism of Bush Administration policies, either domestic or foreign, does not entitle them to attack the President personally.

George Bush is the President of the United States and represents the entire country. Any demeaning public attack against him is viewed by Republicans and Democrats, and all Americans, as an attack on all of us.

...

This was the formal statement, what he said in the media was even more fun to watch.

<extremely interpretive-sic>"This is my family, asshole, and I am allowed to pick on it all I want. But come into my house and insult my relatives and I'll gut you like a fish."

So, yeah.  We can beat each other up inside the party.  We can beat each other up inside the country.  That's just good family interaction.

But in the end, we are united against those who will come into our house and f*ck with our family adversaries...

-cheers!

The Sports Analogies are Good, but Limited (2.00 / 3)

Very good diary!

We all use the sports analogies - how can we resist? - but there are even more accurate analogies for the situation.

I suppose one of them might be to say that we all live on a big ship - the SS America - and that we have had several people competing for the position of captain of the ship.  All sorts of arguments have been made about why one or the other should be in command, the crew has divided into camps of support for each person. And then one camp "wins" the discussion, and a Captain is chosen.

But we all remain on the ship, floating in the ocean with nowhere else to go.

Regardless which person - or even which party - any crewmember supported, no one can hope that the Captain fails.  "I sure hope they show how right I was and this freakin' thing sinks like a rock!"  Even if I - for example - was willing to drown in protest, I'll man the damn guns as ordered.  I'll work the bilge pumps 25 hours a day.  I will do everything in my power to make my Captain successful.

My kids are on this same ship.

This is why unity is so critical onboard a ship.  I can hate the Captain, but I'll be damned if it goes to the bottom because of anything I do.

This goes beyond candidates - it goes beyond party (as hard as that may be to swallow).  The SS America will survive the crossing.

It has to.

Put her on the ticket as VP (none / 0)

Right now, by everything political and factual, Obama only has half the party with him -- not much of an inspiring or rally-around-the-guy endorsement by his own party.

Put her on the ticket as VP and bring the two halves together.  Otherwise you are ignoring the other half of the party, sending a very strong message to the rest of the party and to me, that isn't leadership.  Then, I'll write for Hillary.

Re: Hillary Supporter Say No to Division (2.00 / 2)

I am a Hillary supporter, and I basically agree with what is being set forth in this diary.

However, let me add, unity is a two way street. I am ready to stand with our apparent nominee, but I believe he now needs to take real steps towards unifying the party.

Just as the Hillary supporters need to be mindful of the reality of the nominating process, the Obama supporters need also to be mindful of the fact that there is another candidate out there that received nearly 50% of the primary vote, and will have nearly 2000 delegates in Denver. If we are to truly come together as one family, we need real steps to build a true unity out of this current divide. In this instance, words alone will not do it.

Re: Hillary Supporter Say No to Division (2.00 / 1)

So instead of holding the party hostage for the Presidential slot, it's now holding the party hostage for the VP slot?

What a sea change. Hillary's best chances for getting the VP slot are to do exactly what she's been doing as of the past few days: Defend Obama, have surrogates so the same, and to encourage UNCONDITIONAL support and unity amongst her followers. That's how you earn a VP slot.

Saying it's her on ticket's VP slot or I'm taking my ball and going home is an obvious sign of emotional immaturity.

Re: Hillary Supporter Say No to Division (2.00 / 2)

Actually, it's an objective assessment. Emotional maturity allows one to value things beyond one's immediate needs. It takes time for children to get that concept. When adults show an inability to do it, it is - by definition - emotional immaturity.

It's not meant as an insult. I want Hillary supporters onboard and a united party. If I wanted to agitate them, there are a great many insults and derogatory terms I could throw their way. But at the same time, I'm not going to lie and act like it's rational for someone to say it's Hillary or McCain when the two are diametrically opposed on so many issues. That's just insanity.

by Reeves on Fri May 16, 2008 at 10:19:47 AM EST

Asking her to quit is divisive (none / 0)

She has made so many more unifying statements than he. I hope you guys keep asking her to quit because people will see this.
